Children's Book of Romans - Chapters 9-12

I have written this for children, based solely on the Word of God, but condensed for them... and used Noah Webster's 1828 Dictionary for clarification of some words. My added comments are in italics, and there is a Memory Verse at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 9

I have great sorrow in my heart for those who are the Israelites (the Jews) who were given the covenants, and the law, and the promises, and for whom Christ came.   For the promise was, 'At this time I will come, and Sarah shall have a son.' (and Sarah had Isaac) And when Rebecca was going to have a baby with Isaac, God told her that her older son would be servant to her younger son. The children who were not born yet, had not done any good or evil, but the purpose of God according to his election (God's choosing) would stand, not because of works (that they did), but (because) of him (God) that calls.  Should we say that there is unrighteousness with God?  God forbid! He said to Moses, I will have mercy on those I will have mercy, and compassion on those I will have compassion.  God has mercy on who he will, and he hardens the heart of those he wants to.  O man, who are you to speak against God? hasn't the person who makes pottery power over his lump of clay? What if God waited for a long time before showing his anger against those who are going to be destroyed? So that he might show the riches of his glory on those to whom he shows mercy.  Even us, who he has called, not only from the Jews, but also from the Gentiles (everyone who is not Jewish)

God said in the book of Hosea I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved (these are the Gentiles). And it will come to pass that they shall be called the children of the living God.  Isaiah also said concerning Israel, though there be as many children of Israel as the sand of the sea, a remnant (a number of people that God has chosen) shall be saved, and the Lord will finish the work, and because of righteousness, the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.  The Gentiles (those who are not Jewish) have received righteousness because of faith. Isaiah said "unless the Lord had left us a seed (a remnant of saved people) we would be like Sodom and Gomorrah (that were completely destroyed)

But Israel looked for righteousness by doing the works of the law instead of by faith.  Because they stumbled at that stumblingstone (which is the Lord Jesus Christ, that means that most of them did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God when  he came to this earth) and whoever believes on him will not be ashamed.

Memory Verse: 9:15 "....... I will have mercy on those I will have mercy, and compassion on those I will have compassion."

Chapter 10

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved. They have not given themselves to the righteousness of God.  For Christ is the end of the law to every one that believes. If you shall confess (that means tell others) with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved.  With the heart man believes and is made righteous; and with his mouth he speaks of Christ to salvation.  Because the scripture says, whoever believes on him shall not be ashamed.  There is no difference between the Jew and the Gentile: the same Lord over all is rich to all that call upon him (for salvation) for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

How shall they call on him that they have not believed in? how shall they believe if they have not heard? how shall they hear without a preacher? how shall they preach unless they are sent? How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring good news of good things!

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

Didn't Israel know? first Moses said to them, "I will make you jealous (by the Gentiles) and I will anger you by a foolish nation (the Gentiles).  Isaiah said "I was found by them that did not seek me (the Gentiles) and I was made known to them that did not ask (the Gentiles).  to Israel he said "All day long I reached forth to a people that are disobedient.."

Memory Verse: 10:9 " If you shall confess (that means tell others) with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you shall be saved."

Chapter 11

Has God cast away his people? God forbid! I am an Israelite. God has not cast away his people that he knew before Even at this present time there is a number of people that are chosen by grace. (these are the remnant called the elect)  And so if it is by grace, then it is no more by works: otherwise grace is not grace anymore.

Israel has not received the thing he was looking for, but the elect (those that God has chosen) have received it and the rest (Israel) were made blind (in their heart) God has given them eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear to this day.

Have they (Israel) stumbled so they should fall? God forbid: but through their fall salvation has come to the Gentiles (all other people) to make Israel jealous.  Because of Israel's unbelief they were broken off, and the Gentiles stand by faith.  Don't think highly of yourself, but fear: for if God did not spare Israel, be careful in case he doesn't spare you either.  Look at the goodness and severity of God: on those which fell, he was severe, but toward you, goodness, if you continue in his goodness: otherwise you also shall be cut off.

And they, if they do not continue in unbelief shall be brought in again, for God is able to do that. I would have you understand this mystery in case you think of yourself too highly, blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.  And so all Israel shall be saved:  For this is my covenant to them, when I shall take away their sins.  Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but regarding the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes. (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob)

You in times past did not believe God, but now you have been given mercy because of Israel's unbelief. These also now do not believe that they might be given mercy just as you have been given mercy.  Because all were in unbelief so that God might have mercy upon all.  O the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! his ways are past finding out!  Who has known the mind of the Lord? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever.  Amen.

Memory Verse:  11:36 "For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to him be glory for ever.  Amen."

Chapter 12

Therefore I plead with you brothers, give your bodies to be holy and acceptable to God because this is your just service.  Do not be made like this world, but be changed by the renewing of your mind, so you may show what is the good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.

I say (Paul) through the grace that is given to me, every man among you must not think of himself to be more important that he ought to think. He is to think seriously, as God has given every man a measure of faith. We, being many, are one body in Christ.  We have different gifts according to the grace that has been given to us.  Hate evil things, and cling to good things.  Be kind and affectionate to each other, serve the Lord. Be joyful in hope, have patience in your trials, continue in prayer, give at it is necessary to those who are fellow believers, be hospitable (offering food and shelter if needed) bless those which do not treat you well, be joyful with those that are rejoicing and weep with those that are weeping.

As much as you are able to do so, live peacefully with all men.  As the Lord says, 'Vengeance (proper punishment) is mine'  So if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink. Do not let evil take hold of you, but do good and conquer evil.

Memory Verse: 12:2 "Do not be made like this world, but be changed by renewing your mind, so you may show what is the good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God."
