Sunday School Program Idea for
The Birth of the Lord Jesus
Here is the skit our Sunday School presented by the Kindergarten/Grade one students a few years ago.
Before the day of the skit, we went to an appliance store and got two large boxes, one for the inn and one for the stable, and cut and stapled them into shape, with the door for the inn opening and large enough for a child to walk through. Paint the box to look like an inn, the same for the stable. We drew a cow and a donkey on the walls of the stable, and got some straw to place around the manger which we used a wicker basket, but it would be better if someone could build a wooden manger.
The littlest children, about five years old, played Joseph Mary, and they waited with an adult at the back of the chapel.. An older child played the innkeeper, and he was in place behind the door of the inn. There were two children as Shepherds sitting on the floor to the far right of the stable. We had one child be the angel of the Lord. The angel was played by the oldest child, who was a girl, but a boy would certainly be fine. She waited off stage for her entrance.
Then the Sunday School Superintendent set the stage by quoting Luke 2:1-6....
"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem: (because he was of the house and lineage of David.) To be taxes with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered."
The children were in place, he quoted the verses, and then the Mary and Joseph children came down the isle from the back of the chapel, hand in hand.
They went up to the inn, knocked on the door, and asked the innkeeper "Do you have any room for us?" he told them "no, but you can use the stable." Then they went into the stable where there was a basket for the manger.. we didn't know really how to show the birth, so we just had them sit around the basket with a doll inside for baby Jesus.
Then outside the stable, off to the right there were the two shepherd children and as they sat there we had the angel child entered from in front and off to the side of them. Just before she came in we shone a bright light on the shepherds. Then the angel quoted Luke 2:10-12 to the shepherds:
"Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."
We didn't have a big class but if I were doing it again, I would have more children enter at that point dressed as angels to quote Luke 2:14:
"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
Then the shepherds quoted Luke 2:15:
"Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us."
and they went to the stable where they saw Mary, baby Jesus and Joseph.
And that was the end of the production.. after that we sang a Christmas Carol before the older classes put on their productions.
We didn't show the wise men because according to Matthew 2:11 the wise men saw the "young child" in a house.. they are not mentioned at the manger at all.
I have seen more lavish productions, but I do believe that simplicity is the best, and with young children acting this out, it is just too precious in its simplicity. You can make simple costumes, even just use bathrobes and towels for headgear... some of the children had stuffed animals that were sheep and we used them for the shepherds. Someone made the angel a beautiful dress and we made a golden garland to sit on her head.
May the Lord bless you.
