Easter Story Cookies
This is a great recipe to teach your Children the REAL story of Easter. That the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior is not dead but has Risen. We serve a Risen Savior......
You will need:
1 cup whole pecans
1 teaspoon vinegar
3 egg whites
a pinch salt
1 cup sugar
a zipper baggy
1 wooden spoon
scotch tape
Bible
Instructions:
These are to be made the evening before Easter. Preheat oven to 300F.
*** (this is very important --- don't wait until you are half done with the
recipe).
Place pecans in zipper baggy and let children beat them with the wooden spoon
to break into small pieces. Explain that after Jesus was arrested.
He
was beaten by the Roman soldiers. Read: John 19:1-3 "Then Pilate
took Jesus, and whipped him. And the soldiers made a crown of thorns, and
put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him, and said Hail, King of
the Jews, and they beat him with their hands."
Let each child smell the
vinegar. Put 1 teaspoon vinegar into mixing bowl.
Explain that when Jesus was thirsty on the cross He was given vinegar
to drink. Read: John 19:28-30 "After this Jesus knowing that all things
were now accomplished, so the scripture might be fulfilled, said "I
thirst". Now there was a vessel full of vinegar, and they filled a
sponge with vinegar, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had
received the vinegar, he said "It is finished" and he bowed his head,
and he gave up the ghost."
Add egg whites to vinegar.
Eggs represent life. Explain that Jesus gave His life
to give us life. Read: John 10:10&11 "The thief comes for no other
reason but to steal, and to kill and to destroy. I am come that they might
have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. I am the good
shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep."
Sprinkle a little salt into each
child's hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest
into the bowl. Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus'
followers, and the bitterness of our own sin. Read: Luke 23:27 "And
there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also cried
over him."
So far the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him. Read: Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16 "O taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man that trusts in him." "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Beat with a mixer on high speed for 12 to 15 minutes until stiff peaks are formed. Explain that the color white represents the purity in God's eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus. Read: Isaiah 1:18 and "Come now, and let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow...."
Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoon onto waxed paper covered cookie sheet. Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus' body was laid. Read: Matthew 27:57-60 "When the evening was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also was Jesus' disciple. He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had carved out in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed."
Put the cookie sheet in the oven, close the door and turn the oven OFF.
Give each child a piece of tape
and seal the oven door.
Explain that Jesus tomb was sealed. Read: Matthew 27:65-66 "Pilate said
unto them, You have a watch, go your way, make it as secure as you can. So
they went, and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, and setting a
watch."
Explain that they may feel sad
to leave the cookies in the oven overnight.
Jesus' followers were in despair when the tomb was sealed. Read: John 16:20
"Truly, truly, I say to you, that you shall weep and mourn, but the world
shall rejoice: and you shall be full of sorrow, but your sorrow shall be turned
into joy."
On Resurrection Sunday (Easter) morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter Jesus' followers were amazed to find the tomb open and empty. Read: Matthew 28:1-9 "In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the tomb. And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His face was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And the keepers were so full of fear they shook, and fainted.
And the angel said to the women, 'you fear not': for I know that you seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there shall you see him: I have told you.
And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy; and ran to bring his disciples word. And as they went to tell his disciples, look, Jesus met them, saying "All hail." And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him."
