After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it happened that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses minister, saying "Moses my servant is dead, arise and go over the Jordan (river), you and all the people, to the land which I give to the children of Israel.  As I was with Moses, so I will be with you: I will not fail you, nor forsake you.  Only be strong and very courageous, so that you may do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you. Day and night you shall meditate on this book of the law so that you may do according to all that is written in the book.  Then you shall have good success.  Do not be afraid and do not lose your courage because the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people saying "Command the people, and say to them "Prepare food, for within three days you will pass over the Jordan to go in and possess the land which the LORD your God gives to you.  Remember the word which Moses commanded you saying 'The LORD your God has given you rest, and has given you this land.'

And to the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said "Your wives, children and cattle shall remain in the land on this side of the Jordan but you shall pass before your brothers carrying weapons, and help them until the LORD has given your brothers rest as he has given you.  Then you shall return to the land which Moses gave you on this side of the Jordan and enjoy it .

So they answered Joshua saying "All that you command us we will do, and wherever you send us, we will go.  As we listened to Moses, so we listen to you, only the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses. Whoever rebels against your commands, and will not listen to your words in everything that you command him, he shall be put to death: only be strong and of good courage."
