(Luke 1)

In this story, we learn about the virgin Mary, and how the Lord chose her for a very special purpose before she and Joseph lived together as husband and wife.  The bible says that Mary and Joseph were "espoused"..that means engaged.

Mary had a cousin named Elisabeth, an older woman whose husband Zacharias was visited by the angel Gabriel, and told that Elisabeth would bear a son to be called John, even though she was an older woman, and had never had a baby.

And so when Elisabeth had been carrying her baby for six months, the angel Gabriel was sent by God to the city of Nazareth to Mary.  And the angel came in to her and said "Hail, you that are highly favoured, the Lord is with you: among women, you are blessed"  And when Mary saw the angel, she was troubled by what he said, and wondered what the angel meant by his greeting.

And the angel said "Do not be afraid Mary, for you have found favour with God.  And you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and his name shall be called JESUS.  He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest:......and of his kingdom there shall be no end."

Then Mary said to the angel, "how shall this be? seeing I have not been with a man?"  And the angel said to her "The Holy Ghost shall come upon you, and the power of the Highest shall come over you, therefore that holy thing which shall be born of you shall be called the Son of God."

And then the angel told Mary that her cousin Elisabeth was going to have a baby too, even though she had never had a baby before.  Because, the angel said, "..with God nothing shall be impossible."

And so Mary said, "Behold the handmaid of the Lord: be it done to me according to what you have said."  And the angel went away from her, and Mary went to visit with Elisabeth where she stayed for three months before returning home.

Now when Joseph found that Mary was going to have a baby, he wasn't very happy about it, but the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said "Joseph, you son of David, do not fear to take  Mary for your wife, for the child which is within her is of the Holy Ghost.  And she shall give birth to a son, and you shall call his name JESUS for he shall save his people from their sins."  And when Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had told him, and he took Mary as his wife.  But Joseph let Mary remain a virgin until her baby was born, and he called the baby's name JESUS.

Memory Verse: Luke 1:37 "For with God nothing shall be impossible."
