David and Bathsheba

Now it came to pass that King David sent Joab and the soldiers to go to war, but David stayed in Jerusalem.  And at evening, he got up and went to the roof of his house, and from there he saw a very beautiful woman washing herself.  And so David asked who the woman was, and he learned that she was Bathsheba, the wife of one of his soldiers, named Uriah.

But David sent messengers to go and get Bathsheba, and bring her to his house, and after he spent time with her, she returned to her own house.  And after that, Bathsheba learned she was going to have a child, so she sent word to David.

And David sent for Uriah, and asked him how the war was going.  And he told Uriah to go to his house to be with his wife.  But Uriah would not go to his house, he stayed and slept at the door of the king's house.  And when David asked him why, Uriah told him "the soldiers are camped in the open fields, shall I go to my house to eat and drink and be with my wife?  I will not do this."  And so David told Uriah to stay a for two days, and David fed him and gave him drink, and David made Uriah drunk, but again Uriah stayed with the servants of his lord, and would not go down to his house.

So after a few days, David wrote a letter to Joab and told him to put Uriah in the front of the toughest battle, so that he would be killed.  And Uriah was killed.  And when Bathsheba learned that her husband was dead, she mourned for him.

But after a time David sent and had her brought to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son.  But the LORD was very displeased with what David had done.

Memory Verse:  2 Samuel 11:11 "...the soldiers are camped in the open fields, shall I then go to my house to eat and drink and be with my wife?  I will not do this."
