David Is Anointed King

This is the story of the day that Samuel anointed David to be the future King of Israel.

After Saul had ruled for two years, one day Samuel did not arrive at the time he said he would meet Saul, and so Saul disobeyed the commandments of God by making an offering, and he disobeyed Samuel by not waiting for him. And so when Samuel came he said to Saul, "You have done foolishly, you have not kept the commandment of the LORD your God, and so now your kingdom will not continue because the LORD wanted a man after his own heart." And after that Saul disobeyed the LORD in other ways, and so finally Samuel would come to see Saul no longer.

Then one day the LORD said to Samuel "How long will you mourn for Saul? Fill your horn with oil and go, I will send you to Jesse of Bethlehem because one of his sons will be king." So Samuel took a young cow for a sacrifice and sent for Jesse and his sons. And as he looked at Jesse's sons one by one, he thought that each one would have been the chosen one, but the LORD spoke to Samuel and said "Don't consider his face, or how tall he is, because the LORD sees not as man sees, for man looks at what a person looks like, but the LORD looks at the heart". And so each one of Jesse's sons passed by Samuel and each one was not the chosen one.

And then Samuel said to Jesse "Are all your children here?" And Jesse replied "there is still my youngest son who is looking after the sheep." And Samuel said "Send for him, we will not sit down until he comes". And so the boy was sent for, and he was the one the LORD had chosen. And the LORD spoke to Samuel and said "Anoint him, this is the one." And so Samuel took his horn filled with oil, and anointed David with his brothers standing around, and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that time on, but the Spirit of the LORD left Saul and an evil spirit came and troubled Saul.

And one day Saul was feeling very badly, and his servants sent for David because they knew that David could play the harp in a beautiful way, and so Saul's servants sent for David while he was looking after the sheep, and so David came and played the harp for Saul, and he made Saul feel so much better, that David became the person who carried Saul's armor. And after that, whenever the evil spirit came and troubled Saul, David would take his harp and play for him, and Saul felt much better, and the evil spirit would go away.

Memory Verse: 1 Samuel 16:7 "...for the Lord sees not as man sees, for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."
