In a previous story, we learned how God gave Moses the 10 commandments written on tablets of stone, and how those tablets were destroyed by Moses when he found that the Israelites built and worshipped a golden calf while he was away.  (see children's bible story page for these stories)

After the LORD had brought plagues to the people because of the golden calf, the LORD spoke to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend.  And Moses said to the LORD, "....I pray you, if I have found grace in your sight, show me your way, so that I may know you." and the LORD said to Moses, "My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest."

After that the LORD said to Moses, "Cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and I will write upon these tablets the words that were written in the first tablets which you broke.  And be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to mount Sinai, and show yourself to me in the top of the mountain.  Let no man come with you, no man shall be seen anywhere on the mountain, and the flocks and herds are not to eat near the mountain."

So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first ones, and he got up early in the morning and went up to mount Sinai just as the LORD had commanded him, and brought in his hands the two tablets made of stone.  And the LORD came down in a cloud and passed by before Moses and announced "The LORD, the LORD God is full of mercy and grace, and filled with truth and goodness.." and Moses hurried and bowed his head towards the earth and worshipped..

and the LORD told Moses "before all the people I will do wondrous things that have never been done in all the earth...." and the Lord gave Moses many instructions to tell the people of Israel.

And Moses was there with the LORD for 40 days and 40 nights, he ate neither bread, nor drank water.  And he wrote upon the tablets of stone the words of the ten commandments.  And after a time, when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tablets of stone in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone while he talked with the LORD.  And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, they were very afraid to come near him because they saw how the skin of his face shone.

And Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the people returned to him, and Moses talked with them.  And after that all the children of Israel came near, and Moses gave them all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai.  And while Moses was speaking with the children of Israel, he put a veil on his face.  But when Moses went in before the LORD to speak with him, he took the veil off, and he came out again and spoke to the children of Israel as he was commanded by the LORD.
