In the last story of John the Baptist, we learned about his ministry, and how he baptized the Lord Jesus.. we also learned how John told his followers that they were to follow the Lord Jesus now, that "He must increase, I must decrease"
After that Herod, who was king at that time, had John taken and put in prison because of Herod's wife. John told Herod that it was not lawful for Herod to be married to the wife of his brother. Because of that, Herodias, the king's wife, was very angry at John, and would have killed him, but she could not because But Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and a holy man, and he would not have John put to death, because he was afraid of the people who believed that John was a prophet.
Now when King Herod's birthday celebration came, Herod made a supper for his lords, captains, and all the leaders of Galilee. And when the daughter of Herodias, whose name was Salome, danced before them and pleased Herod, he said to her "whatever you ask of me, I will give it to you, even the half of my kingdom."
So the girl went and asked her mother "What shall I ask?" and her mother said "The head of John the Baptist." and right away she went to the king, and said "I want you to give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate."
The king was sorry, but because he had made a promise, he gave an order that it be done. And so John was killed, and his head was brought on a plate and given to the girl, who brought it to her mother.
Then John's disciples came, and took the body, and buried it in a tomb, and went and told Jesus.
