Now it came to pass at the time when Mary was almost due to have her baby, that there came a command that everyone had to be taxed, each one in their own city. And so Joseph and Mary went from Nazareth to Bethlehem, because he was of the house of David. And while they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have her baby.
But there was no room for them in the inn, so Mary gave birth to her baby in a stable, and she wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, that is the place the animals ate from, and it probably had fresh hay in it.
And in the same country there were shepherds staying in the field, watching over their flock of sheep at night. And suddenly, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were so afraid! The angel was probably Gabriel, and the glory of the Lord is a very bright light, brighter than the sun.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for I bring good news of great joy, which shall be for all people. For unto you, is born today in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this is the sign for you to look for: you shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger." And suddenly, there was with the angel a great many angels, and they were praising God, and saying "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
And then the angels went back to heaven, and the shepherds said to each other, "Let us now go to Bethlehem, and see this thing which has come to pass, which the Lord has told us about." And they hurried, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. And when they had seen the baby, they told them what the angel said concerning the baby. And everyone that heard the news from the shepherds that the Savior had been born wondered about it, but Mary remembered all these things, and thought about them in her heart.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them.
Memory Verse: Luke 2:11 "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.
