There was a day when Jesus and his disciples went into the towns of Caesarea Philippi, and on the way Jesus asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?" And they answered him "John the Baptist, but some say Elias (Elijah) and others Jeremias (Jeremiah) or one of the prophets".
And Jesus said to them "But who do you say that I am?" And Peter answered him "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you Simon Barjona (Peter's full name) for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father which is in heaven...." And Jesus told them that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ..
From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that the Son of man must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders, the chief priests and scribes (a scribe was a person skilled in the law of the Jews, one that read and explained the law to the people ((Websters 1828 dictionary)) ) Jesus also told them that he would be killed, and after three days, rise again.
But Peter took Jesus, and began to rebuke him saying "Be it far from you Lord, this shall not be unto you." But when Jesus turned around and looked at his disciples, he said to Peter, "You get behind me Satan: for you do not delight in the things of God, but the things that are of men".
And when Jesus had called the people to him with his disciples, he said to them "Whoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever will save his life shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it. For what good shall it do a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whoever shall be ashamed of me and my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels and then he shall reward every man according to his works......
These words mean that whoever will receive the Lord Jesus as his Saviour, will turn his heart from the things in this world, and daily follow Jesus, no matter what it might cost that person.. they may be made fun of by friends and family, they may lose friends because of their faith, but they must follow Jesus no matter what, doing as the bible teaches.. because what good will it do a man if he becomes very rich in the things of the world, but perishes because he does not know Jesus as his Saviour? A man can give nothing to keep safe his own soul. If a person is ashamed of Jesus and of his words (in the Bible) then the Son of man will be ashamed of that person when he comes in glory with the holy angels. When Jesus comes again, every person that followed Jesus will be rewarded for the things he has done according as he has followed the leading of the Lord in his life.
