Jesus and the Woman at the Well
John 4

One day Jesus was traveling to Galilee with his disciples, when he needed to go to Samaria first, to a city called Sychar. Jesus was very tired from his journey, for it was a hot country, and so he sat on a well, and it was in the middle of the day.

Soon a woman came to the well, and Jesus asked her for a drink while his disciples had gone to buy food. But the woman said "why are you, being Jewish, asking me to give you a drink, because the Jews do not speak to Samaritans." But Jesus said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who is asking you for a drink of water, you could ask of me and I would give you living water."

The woman said "Sir, the well is deep, where does your living water come from? Are you greater than Jacob?" Jesus said to her "Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water I give him will never thirst; but the water will be a well of everlasting life."

And now the woman was very interested, and she said "Sir, give me this water, so I do not thirst" Jesus said to her, "Go call your husband, and come here." But the woman said "I have no husband". And then Jesus said to her, "You have told the truth, because you have had five husbands, and the man you are with now is not your husband."

And so the woman said "Sir, I think that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped here, but you say that in Jerusalem is where men should worship." And so Jesus said to her "Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you shall not in this mountain, nor at Jerusalem, worship God. But the hour is coming, and is here now, when the true worshippers will worship God in spirit and in truth, for God seeks those to worship him.

The woman said "I know that Messiah is coming, who is called Christ. When he comes he will tell us everything." Jesus said to her "I that speak to you am he".

And just then the disciples came with the food, and wondered why Jesus was talking to the woman, but they did not say anything. Then the woman left her pot and went to the city, and said to the men, "come, see a man who told me everything I did, isn't this the Christ?"

And so the men came to Jesus, and many believed on Jesus because of what the woman said to them.

And so we don't hear any more about the woman. Do you know why Jesus knew she had five husbands? Because Jesus is God, and he knows everything, he even knows everything about you, and about me. And isn't it a wonderful thing that this woman came to know that Jesus is God too. Jesus loved the woman so much that he went especially to see her, because he knew that she would be coming to the well. Jesus loves you too.

1. Because it was very hot and he was tired.
2. He said it would bring everlasting life to whoever drank of it.
3. She went to the city and told the men and said "Is not this the Christ"
4. They went out of the city and went to Jesus, and many believed because of what the woman said to them.
